Case Study : The Fereday's - Redesigning Our Bathroom on a Budget

Our journey to revamp a basic, lack-luster white bathroom into a stylish, functional haven was both an exciting challenge and a lesson in budget-savvy design. With creativity, resourcefulness, and a little elbow grease, we achieved a stunning transformation that breathed new life into our home.

(Before)

Our bathroom began as a typical, dull and uninspiring space – a basic three-piece suite in an outdated palette. It lacked character and didn't reflect our taste. We knew it was time for a change.

Like many homeowners, we had a tight budget to work with. We needed to be strategic in our choices, focusing on high-impact changes while keeping costs down.

1. Redesigning the Bathroom: A fresh coat of paint transformed the bathroom's ambience. We found a tile paint that we thought would be a quick and simple fix, and the results were better then expected. With this being the first significant change we chose white because it not only brightened and freshened the room up, but it allowed us to consider flooring and furniture colours at a later date. White does literally go with anything!

2. The Combination Unit: The second significant alteration was replacing our old pedestal basin and toilet with a sleek combination unit. This compact piece combined a toilet and vanity unit with a sink and storage space, instantly decluttering our bathroom. Its affordable price tag was a bonus especially because at the time it was on sale.

3. Back to Wall Toilet: To optimise space, we opted for a back-to-wall toilet. Its clean lines and concealed cistern gave our bathroom a contemporary touch. This choice maximised floor space, creating an illusion of more room, a valuable trick for smaller bathrooms.

4. New Mirror: We replaced the dated LED mirror with a large bevelled edge mirror. Its reflective surface opened up the room, adding depth and brightness without breaking the bank. Bonus we got the mirror given to us for free!

5. Affordable Flooring: Upgrading the flooring was a must. We chose vinyl tile flooring, which offered durability and a convincing tile finish. Its budget-friendly price was perfect for our project. 2m x 2m pack came in at £58.

6. Replacing the Heated Towel Rail: Our heated towel rail had seen better days and was inefficient. We replaced it with a more energy-efficient model, not only improving functionality but also reducing long-term running costs. We decided to choose a 1200 x 600 curved design to allow more space behind for our large bath towels.

7. Why We Kept the Original Bath: While we considered replacing the bathtub, we decided to keep it for two main reasons. Firstly, it was in good condition, and secondly, it allowed us to allocate more of our budget towards other essential updates. Furthermore, it meant that by not changing the bath, we could keep all the tiles on the wall and save money by not replacing them. What we did change however, was the bath screen and taps. These simple changes breathed new life into the bath and confirmed that our decision not to change it was the right one.

8. Opting for a New Electric Shower: The decision to install a new electric shower was driven by practicality and cost-effectiveness. Electric showers are budget-friendly both in terms of installation and running costs. This addition provided us with a reliable and efficient way to enjoy hot showers without straining our budget, coming in at £120.

9. Finishing Touches: With the major renovations complete, it was time to add the finishing touches that would truly transform our bathroom into a welcoming and stylish space.

New Blind - We removed the old curtain pole and curtain, and replaced with a simple modern, moisture-resistant blind. Its clean lines complemented the overall design while providing privacy and light control.

Robe Hooks: Installing robe hooks on the wall near the radiator was a small addition that made a big difference. It offered convenient storage for towels and robes, keeping them within easy reach and off the floor.

Bathroom Decor: To add a touch of personality and warmth, we introduced bathroom decor elements. Some faux foliage and new soap dispenser breathed life into the space. Not only did they bring texture, but they also contributed to a calming, spa-like ambience.

THE RESULTS

Before and After

Our budget-friendly bathroom transformation exceeded our expectations. By strategically choosing affordable yet stylish elements, we turned an outdated space into a welcoming retreat. The combination unit and back-to-wall toilet optimised space, while the new mirror and flooring added elegance. Redesigning with a limited budget required creativity, but it ultimately resulted in a bathroom that we love. This project taught us that a beautiful and functional bathroom is within reach, even on a budget.
